The Bottom Line

In Clothing on May, 12 2011

For the past week, I have seen an enormous number of women in white bottoms: leggings, trousers, and jeans.  I thought I saw a lot of women in white on the Upper East Side, but once I got downtown, I saw even more.  I’m all about taking risks and being your own trendsetter in fashion, but there are some traditions that need to be kept, and were created for a reason.

A debate in fashion: can you wear white before summer and after Labor Day?  Well, I am a firm believer in not wearing white until summer, and then putting your whites away after Labor Day (with the exception of cruise season).  I’ve spotted women in different variations of white bottoms paired with summery blouses, tank tops, nautical blazers, and more.

As you can see, being that the weather has been beautiful and springy lately, women are getting a rush of excitement to start bringing out their summer pieces.  Hold off  ladies, because it’s not summer quite yet.  Bottom line: it is too soon for white.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve blogged about different bottom options for when you don’t feel like wearing black.  When you want to go casual, get a pair of fun colored jeans like bright yellow or bright blue, and when you want to tone it down but still be casual, go for a nude.  When it’s time for a dressier outfit, go for a camel light trouser.

Noticeably, there are many other options than black between those somewhat awkward, if you will, few weeks between the end of spring and the beginning of summer.  I know it’s tempting to bring out those white jeans, but you only have a few weeks left, so just wait!

What do you think about the old saying?  Vote in the poll below!
